Front view head shot silver felt hat with matcing flt band around crown.

Felt has been used for producing headwear for many centuries and is perhaps the oldest textile material. During the 18th and 19th centuries, felt hats made from beaver felt were very popular with men. Hat wearing was at its peak from the late 19th century until the end of the 1920’s. In the early part of the 20th century, felt hats became a fashion preferred by both men and women and were designed to cater for women with more attention to detail.

There are three varieties of felt used for hat making. Wool felt, Fur felt and Beaver felt. They are a by – product of the meat industry. Wool felt comes from the sheep’s wool. Fur felt comes from rabbit, hare and beaver which has a lovely matt quality, a good option for making vintage unique designer hats for women. Felt hats are generally blocked on wooden hat blocks. In recent years, although the hat has seen a marked revival, many of the traditional hat factories have closed.
